What is conversational cognitive assessment?

Cognitive assessment is the process of measuring how key mental abilities — attention, memory, language, reasoning and executive function — change over time. Traditional approaches rely on timed paper-and-pencil or screen-based tests taken at a single point in life. These snapshot tests are valuable, but they capture only one moment and can feel stressful, unfamiliar and removed from how a person actually thinks and reflects day to day.

Conversational cognitive assessment takes a different path. By guiding a person through a structured, naturally-worded conversation, it draws on long-term and autobiographical memory, recall of personal events and the ability to describe experiences in narrative form. Because conversation adapts to the individual, it can build a richer, more personal picture of cognitive function than a one-off test — and it is gentler to repeat over weeks, months and years.

The real value of this approach emerges over time. Repeated, low-pressure conversations allow a longitudinal cognitive trajectory to be mapped: a personalised baseline followed by changes that matter for that individual, rather than a comparison to a population average. For people worried about early cognitive change, and for the families and clinicians supporting them, understanding an individual's own trajectory can be more useful than a single score on a single day.

VBuddies is developing this conversational, longitudinal approach as a non-diagnostic wellness and research tool — designed to support earlier awareness of cognitive change and to complement, not replace, formal clinical assessment where that is appropriate.
